Pakistan's Indigenous EV Technology Goes Live

Islamabad, 11th December 2025. The Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) launched Electric Vehicle (EV) Technology, indigenously developed by its technology partner, AGECO (Pvt.) Ltd. Through years of dedicated research and engineering, the EV technology — under the brand name ECONOMIA — includes locally designed Electric Conversion Kits, enabling the retrofitting of conventional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles.

The Coordinator to the Prime Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination served as Chief Guest of the ceremony held at COMSATS Secretariat. At the distinguished event, EV converted rickshaws were delivered to M/S Imperial Engineering Company, marking the first commercial deployment of the technology under a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

“Pakistan is among the most climate vulnerable countries, and air pollution across Pakistan's major cities poses a formidable challenge with direct bearing on health and economic activities.”

CHIEF GUEST, COORDINATOR TO THE PM FOR CLIMATE CHANGE & ENVIRONMENTAL COORDINATION

This conversion allows existing fuel-consuming and CO₂-emitting engines to be transformed into fully electric, eco-friendly vehicles — an economical and scalable solution for accelerating Pakistan's transition toward clean transport.

Why This Launch Matters

Speaking at the ceremony, Executive Director COMSATS, Amb. Dr. M. Nafees Zakaria, highlighted the scale of Pakistan's transport emissions challenge: Pakistan's transport sector adds 52.8 million metric tons of CO₂ annually to the atmosphere, with 70% contributed by 32 million fuel-consuming two-wheelers.

He noted that indigenous EVs can help Pakistan reduce its import bill, contribute to import substitution and relieve pressure on foreign exchange reserves, improve the health index, save public health expenses, generate employment, pave the way for innovations, and contribute towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

AGECO and the ECONOMIA Brand

Mr. Aslam Azad, CEO of AGECO, praised the Executive Director's unwavering backing and resolve to help achieve this milestone, thanking Amb. Zakaria and COMSATS for their invaluable support throughout the journey.

Indigenous EVs can help the country reduce the import bill, result in import substitution to relieve pressure on forex, improve the health index, generate employment, and contribute towards achieving the UN SDGs.

AMB. DR. M. NAFEES ZAKARIA, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, COMSATS

The launch of retrofitted EVs is expected to create new economic opportunities, reduce expenditure for vehicle owners, and contribute to cleaner air in densely populated urban centres. COMSATS aims to expand such collaborative ventures with industry partners across its Member States, enabling wider adoption of green technologies across the Global South.

The Road Ahead

The ceremony was attended by senior officers of relevant Ministries and Departments of the Government of Pakistan, representatives of the private sector, and leadership of international organisations based in Pakistan. Media coverage was provided courtesy of the Press Information Department of Pakistan.

With this landmark launch, Economia and AGECO take a defining step in Pakistan's clean mobility story — turning years of indigenous R&D into real-world, commercially deployed electric vehicles on Pakistan's streets.
